First of all we may have a look to some old fashion tips for our plants which are completely free of charge but they require a bit more demand and passion.

The winter is particularly tough season, if we you want to maintain an healthy plant. The biggest problem we are facing are essentially 2

  • The bacteria, which are single microorganism present in every environment, for example there are 40 million bacteria per soil gram. While some of them are harmless and necessary for the ecosystem balance some other could be lethal for our plants. Therefore we should foster a disinfected environment by maintaining for instance a clean vessel.
  • The humidity, during the winter if the heating is open is most probably your plant soil’s will not be enough humid.

The only solutions for the bacteria are mostly keeping the leaves clean and fighting pests with proper chemical specific for particular sicknesses or natural feeding which could improve the vitamins and proteins of the plants. But we strongly believe that passion, love and attention could be enough for mostly every plants we are caring of, without using any chemical solution.

To increase the humidity instead, we can use different ways. But you should adapt at least some of them, humidity is such an important factor for them and domestic heating tends to dry the air. Mostly of the green plants at our homes are usually tropical breeds, which love the heat, but they also need high humidity to live well.

Since we usually do not want to transform our houses into a jungle, we should rather think to a different approach for a safe and livable environment, also for the good of our neighbors.

If we have the classic radiators one simple remedy could be just fulfilling the humidifiers on radiators with some water and checking that they are always almost filled with liquid. If this is not your case because you do not have a radiator, then there are also different solutions. You can just get the soil of the pots moisten with any sprayer and, once or twice a month, you can put the plants to soak in a bowl of water for half an hour. Let it drain well as much water as it wants before putting it into its place.
If the environment is very dry, spray water on the leaves once a week to keep it fresh and clean, preferably mineral or not limestone. And again, as we said in the beginning of the article, you should consider to group the plants into a single area, we consider it very useful for creating a micro climate, even inside our homes. In this way you would be able to maintain proper humidity for houseplants during winter, even in dry climates.

If all of the cases above were not sufficient, and if your winter is particularly rigid then, in order to protect the shrubs, trees and herbaceous perennials, is necessary to use different methods and suitable material. Plants grown in pots can be easily moved in protected greenhouses in large or small, plastic tunnels, in apartments, on the stairs, under a portico, or against a wall facing south.
The species in the ground instead should have some more attention. Already by the second half of November, in case of strong temperature dropping, it is necessary to mulch.

Mulching is an operation used in agriculture and gardening, which consists of covering the soil with a layer of material, at least around 8 centimeters thick. This layer is usually composed by bark of coniferous trees, dry leaves, straw, or wood shavings.

This operation has an incredible amount of positive aspect such as: preventing the growth of weeds around our flowers, keeping the moisture in the soil, protecting the soil from erosion and from the action of rain, avoiding the formation of the surface crust, reducing compaction, keeping the structure and also raising the temperature of the soil.

The exotic plants cultivated in the ground like Datura, banana, bougainvillea if are planted in cold regions, in addition to the mulch of the collar, they must also be completely wrapped with sheets of non-woven fabric. If the region is particularly cold also make 2/3 laps around the plant.

These are the solutions to prevent the diseases of your plants, without improvising jungles into your house and without using chemical methods, which of course could work at the same way, but probably not respecting the centenaries culture of growing plants with dedication and passion.
